Parking, Garbage and the Decline of Toronto’s Small Businesses

In July 2025, Associate Mitchell May collaborated with Kelly Alvarez Doran of Ha/f Climate Design on an article for AZURE Media. The piece examines how Toronto’s solid waste handling and on-site parking requirements often lead to the loss of architectural heritage and fine-grained main-street retail, key elements of the city’s identity as the most multicultural urban centre in North America.

The article takes a closer look at Dundas Street as an example and explores solutions adopted in other parts of the world that Toronto could implement.
