Critical Heritage Perspectives at SSAC Conference
Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada
For its 50th Annual Conference, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada will return to the place it began in 1974: Ottawa. The conference will be held from May 27th to 30th, 2025, hosted by Carleton University and Library and Archives Canada. Giaimo’s Creative Director Stephanie Mah will be presenting at SSAC on May 29 as part of the session Critical Heritage Perspectives. Learn more here.
Stephanie will be sharing insights from Giaimo’s work on the City of Dawson’s Heritage Management Plan, Design Guidelines, and Heritage Bylaw project. The aim of the project is to update the aforementioned documents to improve heritage conservation initiatives, while actively involving and engaging the wider community. A draft of the new HMP and Design Guidelines was presented to Council on May 6, 2025, and can be viewed here.
- The HMP is the City of Dawson’s local guiding document, which provides a framework for preserving and managing heritage resources within municipal boundaries. It outlines the current conservation policy landscape, highlights the importance of heritage conservation in Dawson, as well as provides key tools to guide development projects.
- The HB regulates, prohibits, and imposes the heritage requirements regarding development applications in the City of Dawson. This includes defining the Heritage Advisory Committee structure and proceedings, Historic Resources Permit, Heritage Fund, Incentives, and Penalties.
