Building Value(s): Inside AZURE’s Human/Nature Exhibition

In November 2025, Houses Worth was featured as part of AZURE’s Building Value(s) exhibition at the Human/Nature conference. Houses Worth translates the embodied carbon of threatened Toronto high-rise buildings into a familiar and easily understood unit: the single-family house. Focusing on three at-risk towers, the project calculates each building’s material and carbon value as the equivalent number of houses, reframing demolition as a measurable and relatable loss.
This comparison exposes a paradox in Toronto’s development culture, where dense twentieth-century towers are routinely replaced with larger developments, even as low-density neighbourhoods remain the default urban condition. The installation was developed in collaboration with graduate students from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Department of Architectural Science.
