SMITH BLOCK AT HERITAGE & HOUSING SYMPOSIUM

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, 10am-3:30pm, ACO Toronto is hosting a Heritage & Housing Symposium at the Ontario Science Centre. As part of session 3: The Future of Our Growing City at 2-3:30pm, Joey Giaimo will be presenting Streetcar Development’s Smith Block project as a case study for adding new density to an evolving neighbourhood while integrating a combination of unique conservation approaches. The session also includes presentations from Chiyi Tam, Managing Director at Kensington Market and Toronto Chinatown Land Trust, and Robert Sims, Principal at KPMB, followed by a Q&A panel discussion moderated by Elsa Lam, Editor of Canadian Architect. Located on Queen Street East in Riverside, Smith Block is a unique redevelopment opportunity that integrates heritage conservation with new housing and commercial spaces. The project includes restoration and conservation of four heritage-designated buildings, the reconstruction of the central portion of the historic block which was previously lost to a fire, and the addition of a new mid-rise 9-storey multi-unit mixed-use building.
